Starlight’s Bond 星明かりの絆
Starlight’s Bond / 星明かりの絆 (Hoshikage no Musubi), is a concept for a turn by turn, anime-style video game created to experiment with applying generative AI capabilities to this rich and diverse multimedia format.
Due to the nature of how generative AI functions as a response to a vast number of variables, the amount of contingent scenarios in a video game (ranging from the player’s actions, their character’s achievements and attributes, and their impact on the world they interact with) lends itself to a wide range of possible scenarios.
This game serves as a sample project showcasing the collaborative power of human creativity and generative AI in developing a rich, immersive narrative storyworld. This project combines my creative inputs and revisions with the capabilities of generative AI to prompt character creation, dialogue, narratives, and gameplay mechanisms.
Synopsis:
Players begin their journey in a world that initially appears to be just like Earth, devoid of any magical powers. However, as they progress through the game, they discover the hidden ability to harness elemental forces through forming bonds with celestial beings. The more the players explore and interact with the world, the more they unveil the profound connection between the natural elements and the celestial bodies. Heroes must unite to protect the balance of the elements by forming bonds with star spirits and harnessing the power of the sun, moon, stars, and elements. Players embark on quests to uncover long-lost secrets, facing mythical creatures and cosmic entities to save their world from impending chaos.

Orion is a celestial being who fell from the sky and now wanders the earth seeking a way to return to his celestial home.

Bebiine the Druid Archer

Solara & Solaro
Solaro and Solara are a set of interrelated characters, the son and daughter of Father Time, who possess the unique ability to jump through time but only during daylight hours. A unique aspect of their power is that they cannot be in the same time in history simultaneously.
Background
As the children of Father Time, Solaro and Solara are destined to guard the flow of time and ensure its proper course. Their journey involves traveling through various epochs, harnessing the sun’s energy to correct anomalies and protect the timeline from threats. Their connection to the sun grants them unparalleled knowledge and power, making them formidable forces in the battle against chaos. Due to the constraints of their powers, they must always work in separate eras, coordinating their efforts across time to maintain balance.

Solaro is courageous, strategic, and protective. Solara is wise, radiant, and resolute. Both have a warm and commanding demeanor, reflecting the sun’s nurturing and powerful nature. They possess a deep sense of duty and are highly resourceful, adapting quickly to the challenges of different eras.

The Hive Mind
The Hive Mind is a sinister and intelligent entity made up of multiple interconnected minds, represented by a robotic queen bee surrounded by smaller drone-like bees.

The Hive Mind is a central figure in a high-tech hive environment, embodying the fusion of technology and organic matter. It controls and communicates with its drones to maintain order and expand its influence. The Hive Mind is calculating, collective, and omnipresent.

Caprina the Guardian
Caprina is an anthropomorphized goat with a mix of goat and human-like traits, offering a unique perspective and personality to the game.

Master Raku has long silver hair, a well-kept beard, and deep green eyes. He wears simple, flowing robes of earthy tones and is often found meditating or tending to his garden of exotic fruits.

Example Workflow: How I Used Generative AI to Build This Concept
ChatGPT
Utilizing the large context memory of ChatGPT 4o allowed me to continue to iterate on each of these aspects of content development for the game with reference to all the others, so that revisions each reflected the other aspects of the game and ensured narrative cohesion with one another.
World Design
I envisioned a mystical world with celestial temples and enchanted forests. The AI generated dynamic environmental elements, such as lighting, seasonal changes, and interactive objects, enhancing immersion and bringing the world to life.
Character Creation and Dialogue Development
I provided brief descriptions and key traits for Eek & Voom, outlining their dualistic nature, opposing personalities, made-up language, inclination for rhyming, and their role as a set of companion characters. ChatGPT then generated detailed character backgrounds, unique dialogue, and potential gameplay roles. It also created stylized dialogue that incorporated their distinct personalities and made-up words, enhancing the story. I tweaked the responses, asking for more of the aspects I liked and less of the aspects I didn’t like, making revisions until I had results that I was content with. For example, I first asked for a generic dialogue example. I then asked for certain types of dialogue to be emphasized. I then asked for interaction in various specific scenarios, including speaking to the player and other characters.
Narrative Building
I created the main story arcs and plot points, such as Solara the Time-Traveler accidentally sending the group to an ancient era. ChatGPT expanded this with additional quests, character interactions, and historical details, enriching the overall narrative in a way that is additive but with the constraint of meshing with the broader story world.
After developing two characters, I asked questions like ‘How was [character X] get along with [character Y]?’ or ‘Which character is most likely to [specific action or role]?’
Gameplay Mechanisms
I came up with core gameplay mechanics like how players harness celestial powers influenced by time of day, seasons, and environment. The AI developed these ideas into specific gameplay mechanics, quests, puzzles, and scenarios, ensuring narrative cohesion and strategic depth.
Midjourney / Niji Journey
Storyboard Images
I browsed through an extensive library of Midjourney style reference images on Kive.AI to find this style below, which has the style of a rough sketch and used it with the following prompt to create a sample gameplay storyboard. I generated dozens of images and then narrowed down my selection to the ones that felt most appropriate for the nature of this game.

Character images
For these images, I began with developing the idea for the character. After fleshing out their traits, I instructed ChatGPT to how create Niji Journey prompts in the style I wanted, including technical aspects such as camera angle, background, style reference, character reference, and aspect ratio. I then had ChatGPT create several Midjourney prompts for each character to explore their visual appearance in a variety of ways, picked my favorites, and iterated from there.
